Earlier reports indicated that the two traders at the Madina market would apply color to the fruits to increase sales. Media reports show that the Ghana Police and FDA organised a joint action at the Madina market on Tuesday when photos and videos of the two women in the act went viral on messaging platform, WhatsApp and social media. In the video, one of the traders is seen sitting across two bowls – one which contained the color and another full of “peeled” oranges. She then proceeds to dip the oranges one-by-one and wait for a while as they changed color before taking them out. The FDA is yet to ascertain whether the coloring solution used on the oranges is harmful to consumers, but have classified it “suspicious”. The yellowish color given to the oranges by the solution makes it more pleasing and eye-catching to possible customers. The FDA has since arrested the women for questioning pending further investigations into the type of chemicals used in coloring the oranges.
