The UN Security Council on Thursday condemned in the strongest terms a terrorist attack against civilians in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, which killed tens of people and injured many others.

In a unanimous statement, the 15-nation council said that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, while calling on the international community to bring perpetrators of these acts of terrorism to justice.

The members of the Security Council also reiterated their determination to support peace, stability and development in Somalia.

“They underlined that neither this nor any other terrorist attack would weaken that determination,” said the statement.

Gunmen attacked a restaurant in south Mogadishu Wednesday night, killing at least 18 people in the night-long siege. The extremist group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Al-Shabaab militants have stepped up their assault in the Horn of Africa nation and often target hotels and restaurants including Africa Union bases in the city as part of their campaign to topple the government.
