Armed men raid market in Binduri; brutalise traders 24hours after another attack at Binaba market

Some unknown armed men have stormed the Atuba Market in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

The incident happened on Tuesday, May 17.

The men wielding weapons fired into the air and burnt goods of visiting market women from Bawku, reports say.

A similar raid was reported at the Binaba market in Zebilla in the Bawku West District barely 24 hours after Tuesday’s incident.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the two incidents.

Public Relations Officer David Fianko Okyere told Media General‘s Rabiu Tanko Mohammed that the police are tracking the men, assuring victims and residents to stay calm.

The incidents come after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) alerted the Command of the infiltration of the conflict in Bawku by Burkinabe insurgents.

“Although the Burkinabe nationals involved in the Bawku conflict may be motivated by tribal ties and financial gains, the security situation in the area could serve as a conduit for jihadists and violent extremists to infiltrate and radicalise the local populace to advance their course,” the IGP through his Chief Staff Officer noted.

Security has since been beefed up.
