President Nana Akufo-Addo has stressed the need for the improvement in the lives of teachers in the country, for their dedicated service to the educational sector.
According to the president, for the nation to progress in its development agenda, it requires “well-trained, self-confident and contented’ teachers to ensure that the workforce needed for the country’s overall success are adequately equipped. President Akufo-Addo was speaking at the Congregation Ceremony of University of Education in Winneba over the weekend, when he assured that government was committed to making the teaching profession the dignified and fulfilling career choice it once was.
“Accordingly, government intends to facilitate teacher training nationwide, as well as special incentives for them, such as support for teachers to acquire their own homes, in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Teachers, NAGRAT, and other teaching associations to facilitate an affordable housing scheme for teachers,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo noted that the teaching profession should no longer be seen as a last option for career choices, but as an occupation with the necessary benefits and opportunities for further career advancements. In a report by Class FM, the president in his speech further stated: “We will also support teachers to enroll in Distance Education programmes to boost their capacity. This is in line with our policy of motivating teachers, and rewarding their hard work in the classroom. It is for this reason that government, from September, is re-introducing the teacher training allowance that was cancelled by the previous government.” Commenting on the recent conflict within the governing council of the University, the president charged members of the council to ensure that they address their differences amicably to ensure that teaching and learning is not disrupted.
