A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Alidu Seidu has said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government cannot break the eight-year electoral cycle in government by word of mouth.

The NPP after winning the 2020 general elections has been declaring an agenda to win the next general elections to become the first party to stay in power beyond eight years in the fourth republic.

Speaking in an engagement on GTV on the Breakfast Show on Thursday, April 21, 2022, Dr. Alidu Seidu has said throwing words about will not help the NPP to break the eight.

According to him, it is only the actions of the ruling government that would determine whether the NPP will stay in power beyond the two terms of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Strategy can change a lot of things. In elections, anything can happen. You can’t break the 8 with just your lips. It must be backed by actions.

“There is a possibility that a political party can be in power for more than 8 years,” the UG Senior Lecturer shared.

Meanwhile, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has in a five-year forecast predicted a win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
