The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah has accused the Minority in Parliament of using propaganda to fuel the Mobile Money (MoMo) panic withdrawals after the passage of the Electronic Transaction Levy bill into law.
Speaking to Onua TV in an interview on Wednesday morning, the MP made the claim that people engaged in panic withdrawals are only pretending.
According to him, such people will run back to MoMo service in due time even though the implementation of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) has not commenced.
“The mad rush for MoMo withdrawals in the country is just propaganda and I know that the masses will, for now, pretend not to patronize the mobile money transaction because of the e-levy but I tell you that with time they will understand,” Alexander Akwasi Acquah shared.
The Akyem Oda MP continued, “It is normal that the Mobile Money transaction has declined just after the passage of the e-levy but I am positive that when the masses begin to see development from the proceeds of the new tax they will support the government.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assented to the Electronic Transaction Levy just last week after it was passed by Parliament in the absence of the Minority after they staged a walkout.
The implementation of the controversial levy is scheduled to commence next month as announced by the Minister in charge of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
