The Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency, Cassiel Ato Forson has said the way forward to alleviating the current economic hardships is for government to stop wasting time and seek intervention from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking on ‘The Pulse’ on Joy News on March 17, 2022, he noted that everything points to the fact that the country’s economy is running into a ditch.

According to him, the E-Levy being championed by government cannot deliver the country from the current economic crisis because “evidence we have seen from 2020/2021 suggests that government does not have the political will to implement a homegrown policy that will indeed reverse the fiscal imbalances we are seeing.”

He stated, “We have no choice. Where we find ourselves as a country, there is the need for the government to take a critical decision. The decision may be very difficult, but in the end will be in the interest of the country. I’m urging the government to take a decision that will preserve the bright prospects of this country by going to the IMF.

“Where the country is heading towards, clearly it shows that we are going to have an accident on the way. Accident in the sense that, the way the economy is being run, the levels of our debts, the rate at which inflation is going up, the rate at which our cedi is depreciating and we are losing so much reserves in a short period of time, clearly everything points to an accident that is about to hit us as a country.

He is advising government to run to the IMF and forget about the controversial E-levy.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo administration would not be the first to go to the IMF for intervention.

“I am urging the government to avert that accident by signing off to an IMF programme immediately.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the President is in a special cabinet meeting to decide which way to go; the IMF or the E-Levy.
